Most people who have never been to Govardhan think of the Parikrama as a long walk around a hill. And yes, it is a walk. Around 21 kilometers, mostly on foot, in the open. But anyone who has actually done it will tell you it feels nothing like a regular walk. There is something about this place that stays with people long after they return home.

What is Govardhan Parvat?
Govardhan Parvat is a hill located in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. It is not a large hill by any measure. Hindu devotees belief, especially among devotees of Lord Krishna, this hill is not just a geographical feature. It is considered a sacred form of Krishna himself.
The most well-known story connected to this hill is from the Bhagavata Purana. Krishna lifted Govardhan Parvat on his little finger to shelter the people of Braj from heavy rains wrath by Indra. This act is one of the most important moments in Krishna's life as described in the scriptures. They bow down, touch the sacred mountain and offer flowers and water to it.
What Happens in the Govardhan Parikrama?
The Govardhan Parikrama around the hill is an act of worship. The full route covers about 21 kilometers and passes through some important religious places such as Radha Kund, Shyam Kund, Manasi Ganga, Dan Ghati, and Mukharavind. Each place has its own story connected to Krishna and Radha.
Most people walk the route at a slow and steady pace. They stop to pray at temples along the way, take a dip in the sacred ponds, and sit for a while at places that feel significant to them. Simple food and water is available at several points on the route.
Some devotees do what is called Dandavat Parikrama. In this practice, the person does not walk; instead, they lie flat on the ground, mark where their head touches, stand up, walk to that point, and lie down again. The entire 21 kilometers are done this way. It takes days. People who do this consider it the highest form of devotion they can offer.
The Parikrama is done throughout the year. But during the Kartik month, and especially on Govardhan Puja, which comes the day after Diwali, the crowd is massive in Mathura. This day is directly connected to the story of Krishna lifting the hill and is considered one of the most auspicious times to do the Parikrama.
Why do people keep coming back to Govardhan Parvat?
Govardhan Parvat is a small hill. But what surrounds it is the belief, the stories, the prayers, and the people, which makes the walk around it something much larger. That is why it is more than just a walk.

Why is Parikara Walk Considered Special?
When you walk the Govardhan Parikrama, the atmosphere around you is very different from a normal outing. There are devotees of all ages, including elders moving slowly with full belief, families with small children, young people who have come alone, and sadhus who sit along the route in continuous prayer.
Nobody is in a rush. People stop wherever they feel like stopping. They sing, they chant, and they talk to strangers as if they have known them for years. There is a sense of shared purpose that is hard to describe but very easy to feel when you are there.
The route passes through open land, small temples, and narrow lanes. At certain points, the hill comes very close to the path. Devotees reach out and touch the rocks. Some press their forehead against the hill. These are not performed gestures. For the people doing it, Govardhan Parvat is alive and present, not just a landmark to circle around.
How to Reach Govardhan Parvat from Mathura?
Govardhan is about 22 kilometers from Mathura city. Mathura has good rail connections from Delhi, Agra, and other cities. From Mathura, the easiest way to reach Govardhan is by taking taxi service in Mathura especially if you are with elders or kids . It is more comfortable than local buses, allows the group to travel at their own pace, and makes it easy to visit nearby places like Vrindavan, Radha Kund, or Barsana on the same trip.
